About FASoS Faculty

The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, or in short FASoS, hosts around 1700 students, is situated in the city centre of Maastricht and contains three buildings where you will have your tutorial meetings. The main entrance is a grand monumental building, which is called “De Hof van Tilly”, and you will attend lectures in the oldest existing gym of The Netherlands: the “Turnzaal”. When you are on break, you can go for drinks and a sweet or savoury treat to Bandito Espresso, the best coffee place in town!

About Lumière

Landbouwbelang, the cultural underground of Maastricht is an environmental friendly and non-commercial living- and working community. It started in 2002 and nowadays it is still being used as a cultural free zone, a place for experimentation and a stepping stone for young talent. A lot of artists and young entrepreneurs have used the Landbouwbelang in order to do their work.

The weekly markets held on Markt square in Maastricht every Wednesday and Friday, create a certain vibe in the city. The square is abuzz with a vibrant atmosphere as the vendors come together to sell their best wares. On the market are the best fishmonger from the port city of Ijmuiden, local bakers selling their finest vlaais (traditional Limburg sweet tarts), farmers advertising their regional organic products, and antiques collectors with a passion for antiques and collectibles. These vendors introduce you to all the delicious things and beautiful items that they bring to the market every week with love and passion.

About Maastricht City Hall

The Maastricht City Hall, or “Het Stadhuis”, is the town hall in the centre of Maastricht, sited on the marketplace or “Markt”. Pieter Post designed the building in the 17th century in the style of Dutch classicism. Right next to this monumental building, you can find the far more modern Municipality of Maastricht in the Mosae Forum area, where you need to register when moving to the Netherlands.

Coffeelovers University is located in the Student Service Centre of the University. Enjoy delicious coffee, tea and cappuccino while studying or during breaks. Free WiFi and a relaxed atmosphere ensure a wonderful moment of enjoyment at Coffeelovers. Maastricht University’s Student Services Centre (SSC) helps students with a wide range of issues related to studying and student life. This includes topics such as application, registration, tuition fees and diploma recognition, but you can also contact the SSC for legal advice on a study related issue, career advice or advice from a psychologist.

About Maastricht University Inner City Library

The entrance gate of The Inner City Library is located in the famous Jekerkwartier neighbourhood and the building itself was originally a poor-house, built in 1757. It offers a large collection of books, databases, films, dictionaries and journals in digital and printed form. All of the collections are developed in close consultation with faculty researchers and professors, which allows the library to keep them fully updated and guarantee a wealth of academic information. The Inner City Library has plenty of desktops, but you can also use a personal laptop or tablet to study on your own or in a group. Printing, copying and catering facilities are also available. The University Library has extensive opening hours: all locations are open 7 days a week. As exams approach XXL opening hours apply.

About Bonnefantenmuseum

The Bonnefantenmuseum was founded in 1884 as the historical and archaeological museum of the Dutch province of Limburg. The name is derived from the French 'bons enfants' ('good children'), the popular name of a former convent that housed the museum from 1951 until 1978. In 1995, the museum moved to its present location, a former industrial site named 'Céramique'. The new building was designed by the Italian architect Aldo Rossi. With its rocket-shaped cupola overlooking the river Maas, it is one of Maastricht's most prominent modern buildings. Since 1999, the museum has become exclusively an art museum. The historical and archaeological collections were housed elsewhere.

The Gouvernement aan de Maas, the provincial house, is located on the Maas in Maastricht. To a small extent even on an island in the Maas. It was built between 1983 and 1985. In 1992 the Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Finance of the countries of the European Community signed the 'Maastricht Treaty' in the Parliament Hall. This treaty transformed the European Community into the European Union and laid the foundation for the introduction of the EURO.

About Tapijnkazerne

The Tapijnkazerne is located in one of the parks in Maastricht and was used as army barracks from 1919 until 2010. Nowadays, it is the property of Maastricht University and holds tutorial meeting rooms and learning spaces. The underground design and use of the original material and color reinforces and emphasizes the character of the military area. Important features of the monuments such as the layout, window detailing and stairs are preserved. Spaces have been given names of the NATO alphabet, so that the historical context is also visible in this way.
